This painting evolved when I was exploring Cubism and the artists of that time - which includes Picasso of course. Picasso and Braque especially were forerunners of dismantling reality as it was known then by breaking up the surface of their painted canvases. Monica and her Birdman Hat is influenced by my explorations into this language.

Monica is wearing a dramatic hat and I added a motif of two ‘birdman’ images meeting nose to nose in the middle of the hat. It is, hopefully enigmatic and interesting to live with!

It is a popular print and has travelled to Genoa and to Athens - as well as having her fans in Aotearoa-New Zealand.

The rectangular shape of the paper has to make an adaptation for the long horizontal image of ‘Monica’ if the brown band is included. Without the brown band, the print fits the standard a1, a2 and a3 size.
